Edna Aguilar had a vision of a Hispanic sorority on the SMU campus. She invited other women, who shared the same interest, to a meeting where the idea was introduced. The meeting was held on October 25, 1994, in Smith Hall, Rm 216. Once a group was formed, these women had to organize themselves to prove their capability of functioning as a single entity. They decided to meet at Miami Subs to discuss details and to have nominations.

These women formed Hispanic Women in Action with Edna Aguilar as president and Robert Hogeda, Jr. as advisor. This group of nine women and one man were challenged by the Sigma Lambda Gamma National Board to create their own by-laws, their own Constitution and to hold certain programs. By meeting all the requirements set forth by the National Board, Hispanic Women in Action not only proved to be a working organization but was also officially recognized as a colony on February 18, 1995.

On March 31, 1995 the nine women were inducted as Associate Members. On April 11, 1995, three new women were inducted into the sorority. After much hard work, the sorority fulfilled their requirements for chapter status and achieved official recognition as a chapter on February 24, 1996. On March 30, 1996 ten women were initiated as members. These ten women are recognized as Sigma Lambda Gamma Founders, and they formed the official PI Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority. The final stepping stone for the PI Chapter occurred on October 8, 1996 when the sorority was recognized and chartered by the SMU Student Senate.
